Push backthe darkness.
Arise, shine, and refuse to give darkness room.
The Verse
Arise, shine; for your light has come! And the glory of the LORD is risen upon you. For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and deep darkness the people; but the LORD will arise over you, and His glory will be seen upon you.
Isaiah 60:1–2
Spoken to a people in the dark: the light has already come.
Darkness is real. You see it in the headlines, feel it in the pressure at school or work, and sometimes find it inside your own home. The easy thing is to complain about it, talk about it, or run from it. God gives His people a different command: “Arise, shine; for your light has come!” (Isaiah 60:1–2). Isaiah doesn’t pretend the darkness isn’t there. He says the LORD will arise over you anyway. To push back means to refuse to let something advance or take control. Spiritually, it means refusing to give evil room to operate in your life, your family, your church, and your community.
You don’t push back darkness by becoming darker. You push it back by shining brighter.
Don’t let the world shape you
The world never stops trying to shape what we think, what we value, and what we call normal. Paul’s answer: “do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). God told Israel the same thing before they entered the land: “you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations” (Deuteronomy 18:9). So don’t let culture set your convictions. Don’t trade God’s approval for people’s: “if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ” (Galatians 1:10). And don’t normalize what God calls us to reject. We are called to influence the world, not imitate it.
The world should never have more influence over the way we live than the Word of God.
Light has no partnership with darkness
“Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers… what communion has light with darkness?” (2 Corinthians 6:14). This isn’t about rejecting people who don’t believe. Jesus ate with sinners. It’s about refusing to let any relationship pull you away from God. Sometimes pushing back is one word: no. “Let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light” (Romans 13:12). “Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them” (Ephesians 5:11). Don’t join in, don’t promote it, and don’t compromise just to fit in.
Don’t become part of what God has called you to resist.
Push back on your knees
“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). Notice the order: submit first, then resist. Some battles aren’t won by arguing. They are won by praying. “We do not wrestle against flesh and blood” (Ephesians 6:12), and “the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds” (2 Corinthians 10:4). Pray against the influence of darkness, and pray by name for the friends and family caught in it. Don’t fight the people trapped in darkness. Pray for them, love them, and stand against the darkness that holds them.
Let it shine
God didn’t call us only to point out darkness. Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden” (Matthew 5:14). And the light always wins: “the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it” (John 1:5). Show love where there is hatred, forgiveness where there is bitterness, and truth where there is deception, and share the Gospel where it is dark. In a crooked generation we “shine as lights in the world” (Philippians 2:15).
Start this week in three places: your mind (the thoughts you entertain), your home (the attitudes you allow), and your relationships (the pressure you give in to).
None of this is done in your own strength. “He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4). Jesus is the light. We only carry it.
Don’t just complain about the darkness. Don’t just talk about it. Don’t run from it. Arise, shine, and push back.
A Question for Today
- Where does the world have more say in my choices than God’s Word?
- Is there something I need to stop taking part in, even if I’m the only one who stops?
- Who is walking in darkness that I will pray for by name this week?
Lord, Your light has come, and Your glory has risen over me. Where I have let the world shape me, renew my mind. Give me the courage to say no to what You call darkness, and the grace to keep loving the people trapped in it. I submit to You, and I resist the enemy in Jesus’ name. Teach me to pray before I argue. Let my life shine in my mind, my home, my relationships, and my community, so that people see Your goodness and glorify You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
“I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
