Not Broken —
Being Forged
What 1 Peter 5:10 says God is actually doing in you when life doesn't let up.
And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.
No one asks for a hard season. We quietly assume that if we just land the right job, the right relationship, or the right circle, we can buy our way out of pain. Christian culture has its own version of that same lie: that following Jesus should come with a pass from suffering. So when life hits hard anyway, the question sneaks in — if I'm His child, why does this hurt? Peter doesn't dodge that question. He tells you plainly what's actually happening underneath the ache, and it isn't abandonment. It's construction.
Jesus was direct about this: "In this world you will have trouble." Carrying your cross was never a promise of an easy road — it's a promise you don't walk the hard road alone. Suffering without God ends in despair. Suffering with God becomes the very place He does His deepest work in you. From these two verses, here are four things He's doing in you right now.
He Will Restore You
The Greek word behind "restore" is katartizō — the word used for mending torn fishing nets and setting a broken bone back into place. Pain doesn't mean God is destroying you; it means He's mending the tear. That friendship that ended badly, the heartbreak that left you questioning your worth, the season that shattered your plans — this is where God works. He takes the broken pieces and reshapes your character, turning what bruised you into what matures you (Psalm 147:3).
He Will Make You Strong
The word for "strong" here, sthenoō, means to be filled with spiritual muscle and endurance. You know what it's like to hit a wall — exhausted by pressure, running on empty, worn down just from trying to do the right thing. But God allows opposition to act like resistance training. The exact weight that seems built to break you becomes the weight He uses to build your stamina — not just so you survive, but so you can help someone else carry theirs (2 Corinthians 12:9).
He Will Make You Firm
Stērizō means to set something fast — to fix it firmly, solid as rock. Easy seasons let you lean on superficial validation: what people think, how a post performs, whether you're keeping up. But when a hard trial strips all of that away, you find out who you actually are in Christ. Suffering anchors you so you're no longer moved by every opinion or trend that passes through (Psalm 40:2).
He Will Make You Steadfast
Themeliōō means to lay a foundation so deep no storm can move what's built on it. Maybe it's stress about what's next, worry over how the bills get paid, or heaviness at home that makes everything feel unstable. When everything around you shakes, God settles what's inside you. He sets your feet on ground that doesn't move — so when the next hard thing comes, your faith doesn't come apart with it (Matthew 7:24-25).
Think of a sculptor with a hammer and chisel. Every strike knocks away rough stone — from the outside it looks like damage, but He's carving out a masterpiece. God isn't using your pressure, your stress, your heartbreak to ruin you. He's using it to chisel away fear, pride, and the need to fit in. What's bothering you today will pass. What He builds in you through it will not.
God cares more about your character than your comfort, because comfort leaves you weak but character makes you unshakeable. Walk through the storm with Jesus and you don't come out damaged — you come out restored, strong, firm, and steadfast. To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
A Question for Today
- Where does it feel like God has gone quiet right now — and what would change if you believed He was actually mending something there?
- What's one thing you've been leaning on for validation (approval, performance, comfort) that this season is exposing?
- Who in your life is walking through their own hard season that you could strengthen, the way God has strengthened you?
Father, we don't always understand why the road is hard, but we believe You are the God of all grace. Even now, mend what's broken in us, anchor us to what's true, and give us strength for what's ahead of us. Settle our hearts on ground that cannot shake — Your love, Your promises, Your presence. In Jesus' name, Amen.
